Changes to Government Code Chapter 68 and TAS, by Marsha Godeaux, Program Specialist VI of TDLR


The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation have been working on updating the Texas Accessibility Standards for over a year to make accessibility requirements easier to regulate. This course will go over TDLR process for updating TAS as well as updates to the Texas Government Code 68. We will also go over some of the items that are being implemented into the 2022 TAS proposal and how those differ from ADA requirements.

Using case studies as a basis for discussion and teaching, this session will look at examples of design solutions that are elegant, accessible, and inclusive. In many cases, these solutions are both simple and invisible. In others, while quite noticeable, the designs are appealing and welcoming to a wide range of users. Designs that are simultaneously attractive, easily maintained, and accessible tend to be durable and withstand the test of time.


Case studies will include examples from the National Park Service, the Missouri Botanical Garden, projects developed through the IDEA Center’s UD certification program, and a selection of smaller projects.

The ADA and other accessibility standards, regulations, and codes rely on specific terms to convey important information and requirements consistently and efficiently. These “Magic Words” must be understood to keep those requirements straight. This session will examine over 100 of the most critical and confusing terms and their definitions. Unfortunately, all of the various regulatory documents don’t use the same definitions for all of the same words. We’ll be looking at many of those, too.

APA posts CE/LU credits on approved classes directly to TLDR, DBPR, and AIA. Classes noted as self-reporting must be reported by the individual attending the course. ICC and ACTCP courses are self-reporting.


Participants meet the CE/LU requirements of numerous organizations by attending APA Training. APA is an approved CE/LU provider for TDLR Provider (#1521), AIA/CES Provider (#G583), ICC Preferred Provider (#1321), and Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR, #PVD312). APA also provides preverified ACTCP credits on noted courses and has previously awarded an APA-ADA Specialist Designation, an APA-ADA Assembly Area Designation, and an Accessibility Standards completion certificate. APA partners with APAC (Accessibility Professionals Association Certification Program) to provide CE credits.
